RACES ABANDONED

TRACK UNSAFE TO-DAY

<P.A.> CHRISTCHURCH, this day

Heavy rain, accompanied by sleet and snow, during the night caused the abandonment of the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting at Riecarton to-day.

The decision to abandon the races was made at a meeting of the club committee this morning, and was arrived at for the following reasons: (1) That the track is now unsafe to race on. and will be unsafe for some days; (2) that although the military authorities, who were to take over the course on Monday, had agreed to meet the club in every way, the committee was reluctant, in the circumstances, to interfere with the arrangements made. All Rugby. hocKey and basketball matches were also abandoned.
