ENROLLED LATE

IN FIRST DIVISION

THREE MEN TO PAY FIXES

Several more men who had failed to enrol in the First Division of the National Reserve within the stipulated time were dealt with in the Police Court by Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M.

In pleading guilty. Melbourne Sherman, a salesman advanced the excuse that he thought when he registered for Social Security it was sufficient and that he did not have to again register. He had since enrolled.

"You ought to have known better." the magistrate told him. "You saw all your friends going to the war. I suppose, and you just dodged. You shirked it badly and there is no excuse at all. You are fined £15."

David A. Phillis, who pleaded guilty and offered a similar excuse, was fined £10, while Thomas James Hayes, a fisherman, who said he thought all fishermen were exempted, was fined £5. It was pointed out by his counsel, Mr. White, that Hayes was in hospital about the time he should have enrolled. He was quite anxious to serve and. in fact, was shortly reporting himself for medical examination.
