HAWERA NOTES

HORSES FOR HUNT MEETING (° C ) HAWERA, Thursday. Owing to weather conditions Hawera trainers have been hampered in the preparing of horses for the early spring racing and consequently, with the exception ot norses recently raced, many will be seen to better advantage as the season progresses. Fine weather during the past week has had a beneficial effect on the tracks, and they are assuming daily a bu r ?'® r and more interesting activity. . j/ e season promises to be a busv one, With 60 horses in active commission. The combined Hunt Club's fixture, opening at Aew Plymouth on the 28th inst., is engacing attention, with '20 horses from this centre listed to compete. Maiden horses in High Tone, Princess rlavia, Illuminacre and Xegara, have got through a good amount of pace work, and will bo seen out at New Plymouth on the opening day. Xepnra and Princess Flavia, two three-year-olds under Leo George's care, appear useful sorts. The last named is a well-proportioned mare by Iliad from the imported mare Royal Favours, having plenty of size. Xegara showed speed as a two-year-old, but was put away eArly. He is by Plato and a very racy-looking youngster.

Ring Chief and Battledress, two three-year-olds expected to do well this season, are doing splendidly. Ring Chief especially is coming to hand rapidly and showing an eagerness in his work that suggests racing condition when required. Battledress is ' lst . e d to race at Xew Plymouth, and Ring Chief will probably be 6een out at WatiL-a-nui a week later.

Surveyor-General has been doing plenty of pace work and he also will be ready as soon as required. Should Improve Martene, who last season had nine placlngs to his credit, is working regularly and should improve on his last season's showings. \\ insome Lu is holding his condition splendidly and will strip a very fit mare for her New Plymouth engagements. A new aspirant for hurale racing from this centre is the Hunting Song gelding Barry Boy, who is shaping very promisingly in his schooling efforts. Endowed with plenty of pace, Barry Boy has been affected with respiratory troubles iu the past.

Val Tore, on liis latest showings, looks a promising prospect for next outings. Royal_Star 11., who has disappointed in ings. \\ insome Lu is holding her condition well and may make amends early. B. La Pouple has had his Illumination gelding qualified lor hunters' events, and ho has jumped well over the Hawcra steeplechase fences. Promising Galloper The same trainer has the good-looking Cctawayo in capital order to polish up lor early racing. Cetawayo, it will be remembered, was hailed as a coming champion early last season, but failed to live up to his reputation, and was given a good let-up. He shaped well in his first fast work since resuming work. Resingold has also resumed regular work, looking much benefited by his spell, and is such a clever jumper that a hack hurdles race should soon reward his connections.

Miss Phnlcron, who prrformod so promisiugly during tlie latter part of tbc season just concluded, lias wintered well and resumed work. Although she has not grown much taller she has developed splendidly otherwise?, and promises to add to her record earlv.

Three llawera two-year-olds likely to be prominent early are Peter's Choice, by Gynerium from Melissa, the Hunting Song relative to Surveyor-General, and War Effort, who are going pleasingly in their work, the two first named being the more forward.
