FLEW TOO LOW

WELLINGTON AIRMAN FINED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Friday. For flying an aircraft ,in such circumstances as to cause unnecessary danger to persons and property Alfred Rose, company manager, was fined £4 by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M. A charge of flying an aircraft over the city at an altitude which would not enable it to land outside the city should the means of propulsion fail was withdrawn. Evidence was given by a ground engineer that Rose took a machine from Rongotai on a pleasure flight on March 9, and other evidence showed that he had alarmed people at Karori by coming dangerously low. In his own evidence Rose said he lived in Messines Road and that afternoon his wife held a tennis party there. He flew over the house, the altimeter showing 850 ft to 900 ft. Karori was approximately 500 ft above sea level. He also said he thought he could have brought the aeroplane safely down in Karori Park or on Chaytor Street tip if necessary, bringing from Mr. Luxford the remark that cricket would be played in the park on a Saturday afternoon in March.
