YOUNG GTLDO BEATEN ON POINTS BY RON McLAUGHLIN
| Ron McLaughlin, who accepted ; the fight only on Wednesday, did well to defeat Young Gildo on points at Leichhardt Stadium last Thursday week. "Hockey" Bennell was to have been Gildo's opponent, but he was unable to fight owing to an attack of boils. McLaughlin had been training only a few days for his fight with Terry Reilly in Melbourne next week in the welter-weight championship elimination series. When the fight was over AlcLaughlin exclaimed, "Thank goodness that's finished! I took a risk, but I badly needed a fight and I think I will feel the benefit of it." He had an advantage of half a stone over Gildo, scaling 10.6 i. The referee said he gave the decision to McLaughlin because he was the more effective and keener puncher. "Gildo was a busy little lighter. He punched more often than McLaughlin, but his punches lacked sting." The fight began quietly, but in the fourth round each scored with an exchange of solid blows, says the "Daily Telegraph." McLaughlin landed two impressive right crosses to the jaw and Gildo scored with similar blows. McLaughlin continued to punch hard with his right and in the seventh round he dropped Gildo with a rip to the body. Gildo claimed that he had been hit low, but he rose and signified that he wanted to continue. The last three rounds were exciting. The boxers stood together frequently in an exchange of punches. McLaughlin scoring with left hooks to the head and Gildo with both hands to the body. ..The margin of points in favour of McLaughlin was small, but there was no doubt about the correctness of the referee's decision. Cildo showed flashes of his old-time brilliance, but McLaughlin ahvavs I appeared to have something "in reserve.
