Last Two Winners Of Caulfield Cup Not Eligible For Stud Book

By a remarkable coincidence, neither Beaulivre nor Rivette Z n Au„°lll e o .k aUlfi " d CUPS ' U eßsiW « '°' '"•='«-» *• Considerable conb-oversy centred around the refusal to admit Beaulivre, but Harry Bamber, owner-trainer of Rivette, has just divulged that his two cups winner of 1939 is ineligible herself, although her dam, Riv, is a stud book mare.

After doing road work for a couple of months, she reappeared on the training track this week, and BamP or the opinion that the troublesome foreleg, which placed her out of action last spring, appears sound again. At the age of eight it might be expecting too much of Rivette to win another important handicap, especially as she will receive her share of weight, but Bamber does not think it impossible. "I have a new method of training her, but am saying nothing about it at the moment. It will be time enough to tell you if and when it proves successful," he declares. Bamber's unorthodox methods with Rivette prior to her 1939 triumphs staggered orthodox trainers, so the outcome of his latest "experiment" will be awaited with keen interest.

"THAT is the real reason why I 1 have continued to train her " Bamber informed the "Sunday Sun!" I "In other circumstances, I would ; have retired her a year ago, but her ! ineligibility for admissiop to the Stud Book has lessened her value as | a brood mare. ; "It means that her progeny will not be classed as thoroughbred, will ! not be eligible for inclusion in the annual yearling sale catalogues, and i will not be permitted to start in the classics." | Blames Himself | Bamber blames only himself for not acquainting the Keeper of the j Stud Book of Riv'.s stud history earlier than he did, nut, in extenuation, states that he was not conver- . sant with the regulations governing ; such matters. j And it is anomalous that, while j Rivette is not recognised as a stud ; book mare, her yearling half-sister, by Frilford, is officially a thoroughi bred. i Volume 19 or the Australian Stud I Book, which has just been published, records the stud career of Rivette's dam as follows:— "Missed in 103S, ch f in 1939 by Frilford, and served by Regular Bachelor. Had earlier stud record." The "earlier stuc" record" is the catch, as far as Rivette's ineligibility is concerned. She was foaled in 1933, and that fact should have been reported to the Keeper of the Stud Book by January of the following year. On payment of special fees, application may be made to the Stud Book committee to permit of late returns, these fees being fixed on a sliding :;ca!e, governed by time limits. Bamber, however, left Riv's returns too late to enable him to have Rivette recognised, and he states that his plea of "meritorious performances" fell upon deaf ears.
