MAORI RACE WELFARE
Success in securing the eo-opera-tion of Government Departments and other organisations was a feature of the year's work of the Auckland Council T)f Temperance Education as reported to the annual meeting last night.
The speaker was the superintendent. of the Methodist Maori Mission, the Rev. G. I. Laurenson, who spoke of the value of the work the council was doing for the betterment of the Maori race. A special problem in the Maori temperament arose from the remarkable reverse in the decline of their numbers, which now made them feel that they had a destiny of growing strength. In the decade from 1926 to 1936 they increased by 29 per cent, while Eux-opeans increased by 11 per cent.
The following officers were elected: President. Mr. W. D. M. Glaister; deputy-president. Mr. F. C. Pace; secretary and treasurer. Mr. L. E. Falkner.
