OBITUARY

MR. JOHN CORNWELL

AUCKLAND PIONEER

The death has occurred at the ape of 90 years of Mr. John Cormvell of Hepburn Street, Pon.sonby, a resident of Auckland for many years. Mr. Cormvell was horn at' Preston England, in 1851, and entered the carpentry trade at an early age In his youth he travelled round the world as a ship's carpenter. Sixtyseven years ago Mr. Cormvell arrived at Auckland with his wife on the vessel Assaye. For about 15 years he undertook important carpentry work for the Government in Auckland and later he established a flax mill at Drury. Returning to Auckland for a time he established another mill in the Whangarei district. Since his retirement 34 vears ago he had lived at Hepburn Street. Enjoying remarkablv good health until a week ago, Mr. Cormvell remained in full possession of his faculties until his death. He was keenly interested in building model ships, and his models in kauri gum of five well-known vessels are examples of fine craftsmanship. Mr. Cornwell was also a bird fancier and travelled to England three times in the pursuit of his hobby. Mrs. Cornwell died 12 years ago and Mr. Cornwell is survived by six children and a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. PASTOR J. S. BIXXI E For a number of vears a Baptist minister at Auckland, Pastor J. S. Binnie has diea at Christchurch. Born in Edinburgh, Mr. Binnie was in business there for some vears. Coming to New Zealand in 1925. he took up the position of assistant minister to the late Rev. J. W. Kemp at the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle, serving in this capacity for five years! Mr. Binnie received and accepted a call to the Sandringham Baptist Church where he was a minister for four years. For the past two years he had held the pastorate of the Opawa Baptist Church. Christchurch. MR. C. E. MIDDLETON The death has occurred suddenly in Christchurch of Mr. Clarence Edgar Middleton, of Waimiha. Born in England, Mr. Middleton came to New Zealand 33 years ago. For the past 27 years he had been farming in the King Country. During the Great War he served for three vears with the Wellington Mounted Rifles. He was a justice of the peace, and was prominent in all the activities of the district. He leaves a widow and two sons. MR. H. CHEESEMAN The death has occurred of Mr. Horace Cheeseman, of Flat Bush Road, Papatoetoe, at the age of 75 years. Born at Whangarei, he married Miss Sarah Jane Heape, of Kamo, in 1887. For 35 years Mr. Cheeseman served with the Kauri Timber Company Limited, spending much of this time in the North Auckland and Coromandel districts. He retired 10 years ago. For a long period he was a member of the Masonic and Oddfellows' lodges. Mr. Cheeseman is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter. There are 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
