LIGHTER THAN CORK.

Balsa wood, a tree scorned for years and regarded as of no commercial value, is one of Nature's most valuable products. Not only is it 2i times lighter than cork, but it is as durable as spruce. It has been found to be the ideal wood for aeroplane wings, and it is rapidly supplanting cork in lifebelt preservers and in many other useful purposes. The tree is native of South America, but it will grow anywhere in a temperate climate. Furthermore, it is a very rapid grower. Its existence has long been known, but it decayed very rapidly, and was a great absorber of water. Now it has been found that by treating the tree with a certain water-proofing mixture it can be rendered as durable as any other wood. 1
