"GRAND GESTURE"
EIRE AID TO BELFAST. Fire Brigades Rush To Stricken Northern Capital. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Reed. 11 a.m.) LONDON, April 17. Fire brigades from Dunlaoghaire, Drogheda and other places in Eire raced across the border in response fo an S.O.S. from the Northern Ireland Government during the Belfast raids. The chief officer of the Belfast fire brigade said:—"lt was a grand gesture from Eire when Dublin welcomed hundreds of refugees from Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland."
In the air raid on Northern Ireland on Tuesday night, says an earlier message, 200 to 300 bombere destroyed hundreds of homes in Belfast and adjoining towns. There was a considerable iiiinilier of oilsiiiiltics, owing to hits on :i theatre, a clmrcli and air raid shelters. Several large fires wore caused, but were quickly controlled.
Eye-witnesses say the severity of the raid equalled that at Coventry.
