BRILLIANT ECONOMIST
One of tlie most distinguished economist*, of his time, and also well known ns president of the London. Midland and Scottish Railway. Josiah Charles Stamp. fir.-t Baron of Shortlands. has been .killed as the result of an air raid over London. Lord Stamp had written extensively on economic and statistical 'luestions. especially taxation, and wa* also a leader in building society movements.

In addition to his work as a civil servant, lie continued his education at London I'nivercity, taking his B.Sc. with firstclass honours in 1011 and becoming (olideii Prizeman in 1012. At 21 he jmi)|K'd over the heads of a hundred other officials to become a first-class surveyor of taxes. By 1010 he had reached the rank of Assistant-Secretary of the Inland Revenue Department, at a salary of £1000.
