INTOXICATION CHARGE

FINE OF £10 IMPOSED.

" It is rarely we find a woman before the Court on a charge like this," said Mr. J. Morling, S.M., when dealing with Katrina liossiter, who pleaded guilty to being in a state or intoxication while in 'charge of a motor car in King's Drive, on January. 17.

Sub-Inspector Cahvell said that at 9.40 p.m. last ii'iday a constable saw a motor tar being driven along King's Drive on the wrong side of the road. Shortly afterwards a car approaching in the opposite direction pulled in close to the kerbing and stopped, but was struck by the. defendant's car, though the impact was not serious. Defendant's car then proceeded on, but after travelling a short distance was pulled up in the centre of the road. On going to the car the constable found that the. defendant was the driver and that she was under the influence of liquor to an extent described as bordering on drunkenness. She. had never previously been in trouble.

Counsel for defendant, Mr. J. F. W. Dickson, said she was a married woman about 40 years of age. Sihe had been to the hospdital that evening to see a woman friend, amd had taken some gin. However, the friend did not want the gin. The woman's husband was at the hospital and left with defendant. They drove to the station, where the man suggested they .should have a drink of the gin, and they did so, with t/he result that defendant 'became under the influence liquor. "She is very sorry. It iu very rare for a woman to be before the Court on a charge like this, and 1 suggest K is a case Where a fine should •be imposed," said Mr. Dickson. Mr. Morling fined defendant £10, cancelled her pr«fcent driving license and disqualified her from driving a car for one year.
