RECOUPING LOSSES.
"When spoken to by Detective Gordon bhe defendant put forth a rather novel excuse," eaid Detective-Sergeant Walsh in the Police Court to-day, when William Alfred Doughty, eaJbinetma.ker, aged 51, pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker.
Mr. Waleih ea.id defendant was on the "hill" at Ellerslie yesterday taking bets, and was assisted by a "runner," who would scout around and bring bets to defendant. When epoken to t>y Detective Gordon the defendant admitted he 'had taken between 50 and 60 bets from 2/6 to 5/, and he had £12 8/ in his possession. "Hie excuse was that he had taken £15 to the races the first day and lost portion of it betting, so foe decided ifeo try to get it back by setting up in Opposition to the totalise tor. He also told the old story that he only did it to oblige friende," added the DetectiveSergeant.
Mr. F. H. Levien, SJtL, imposed a fine of £20.
