FIERCE GORSE FIRE.

WELUHGTOH SUBURBS. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Heavy smoke rolling over Wellington to-night originated in one of the most extensive and spectacular gorse fires that has taken place in the nearer suburbs of the city in recent year*. Raging from 2 o'clock in the afternoon until late to-night it consumed hundreds of acres of gorse between Melroee and Houghton Bay. Diverted by a change of wind and the efforts of firefighter* rrom houses along the summit of the hill, the fire threatened with destruction the Salvation Army Eventide Home for elderly women, at Mersey Street. Firemen fought the flames from about five o'clock until midnight. For «ome hours they were kept busy holding it back, with hoees from the Eventide Home.
