BY A HEAD.

SIR BEAU WINS. THE KING'S PLATE. ORELIO'S SUMMER CUP. Backers began well at Ellerslie to-day by making Brahman an oddson favourite for the opening event of the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's four-day Cup meeting. The weather was again excellent, the course in great order, and there was a large attendance.

Brahman was made a very warm favourite for the Fergusson Handicap with which the proceedings opened, an<l he just pulled Lis backers through, getting up to beat Black Majesty by inches. The latter went a much better race than he. did on the opening day, being the leader all the May till Brahman headed him. Lady Acushla was always prominent aiid returned a good place dividend. Black Majesty, C'alula Boy and Lady Acushla were the first out, and going along the back Black Majesty was followed by Lady Acushla, Oalula Boy, Brahman, Town Survey, Hunter's Xight, Radiant Yaals and Ivaratoki. There was not much alteration as they ran past the four furlongs post and Black Majesty led into the straight from Brahman, C'alula Boy, Lady Acushla and Town Survey. Halfway down Brahman ranged alongside the leader and got the verdict by half a head, with Lady Acushla a length further back third, followed by Hunanga. Town Survey. Flying Vixen, (.'alula Boy, Radiant Yaals and Karatoki.

Won Again. High Star made it two on end when lie accounted for the Ponsonby Himlles. He was never further away than second, and, running past Bachelor King at the turn into tlie straight, went 011 to win very easily and return a remarkably 1 good dividend. Bachelor King ran his best race since lie won at Pukekohe in March, and he should not be long in getting a stake. Aussie Ka finished a good third, and should be hard to beat before the meeting is through. The start was a straggling one and Kaiwaka. Sun of the Sbil. and Melvanui, los/t a lot of ground. High Star and Bachelor King were the leaders from Prince Rangi. Flour d'Or. Blight Idea, ami Rival, Sardue coining (o grief at the first fence. Bachelor King showed the way past the stand from High St.ir, Prince Kangi, Flour d'Or. Bright Idea, Silver Eagle, and Night Hawk. 1 here was not much change along tile back and just before reaching the straight. High Star went to the front from Bachelor King. Fleur d'Or and Melvanui. Once over the last obstacle, High Star went on to win by four lengths from Bachelor King, who beat Aussie Ra by a neck. Melvanui, who was one of those badly away, came on to get fourth, with Bright Idea. Cherry Plum, Fleur d Or, Son of the Soil and Kaiwaka next.

Sir Beau Just Wins. The King > Plate provided an excellent finish, the hot favourite, Sir Beau, winning very narrowly from Royal Chief with Don't Forget a good third. The last-named made the pace for most of the way followed hv Sir Beau. Roval Chief lying last till half a mile from home when he commenced to move up. Sir Beau headed Don't Forget shortly after turning into the straight, but Roval Chief was not far away, and lie just failed to collect the favourite. Don't Forget was a couple of lengths clear of Sir Beau crossing the top with Gayest

Son, Lambourn, Sir Cameron, and Koval Chief following in that order. Don't Jorget and Sir Beau were about on terms at the entrance to the straight with Royal Chief just behind them, oir Beau headed Don't Forget, and stalling off a strong challenge by Roval Chief won by a head, with Don't Forget a neck further back third. Gayest Son was fourth with Lamibourn next, while Sir Cameron was pulling up. The race was run at a fast pace throughout as the times struck by Mr. ,T. K. Douglas, the official timekeej>er, show. The 'first furlong was covered in 14s, two in 2(>s three in 3Ss. four in 49 3-Ss. five in 1.1 and the full distance 1.36 4-5.

I Belle Cane Unplaced. Orelio put up his best performance to date when he won the Summer Cup in the smart time of 2.4, which equals the rare record established by Round Up in 1937. The latter raced in the same colours. Orelio hopped out smartly and soon hit the front, holding that position throughout. Lou Rosa came fiom a good way back to get second, while Cornish put in a good finishing effort to get third. The hot favourite Belle Cane was not well placed early, but she ran up along the back and was handy at the straight. She then put in an effort, but failed to sustain it. Orelio led out of the straight from Princess Val, Pern, Mittie, Royal Appellant, Cornish and Foxsen. Along the back Orelio was followed bv tern, British Talent, Princess Val. Cornish. Mittie, toxsen, Royal Appellant and Belle Cane. British Talent ran up to Orelio crossing the top. with Pern, Princess Val, Belle Cane. Mjttie, Cornish, Greek Queen, Roval Appellant and Princess y M I „,ost handy of the others. Orelio led into the straight from Pern. British Talent. Creek Queen. Mittie. Belle ( ane. Royal Appellant and Lou Rosa wide out. Lou Rosa then put in his claim, but failed to reach Orelio by three-quarters of a lensitli. while Cornish was half a length away third. Belle Cane was fourth, followed by Greek Queen. Sly Fox, Mittie, Erlick, Princess Val. Foxsen, Royal Appellant and British Talent. The sectional .times were«;.Two furlongs 265, three 38s, four 505,.-five 1.2 3-5, six 1.15, sewn-t.28, and the full distance 2.4.
