ESSENTIAL FOOD.
LISTED IN BRITAIN. Preference In Shipping Space Allocation. ASSISTANCE OF DOMINIONS. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON. July 21. The Associated Press learns that the Ministry of Food has listed cheese, bread, butter, milk, herrings, fruit and vegetables as essential foodstuffs for Britain in the event of a long siege. They will be given preference over all other commodities in the allocation of shipping for imports.
This licit is greatly influencing the discussions at present proceeding regarding the extent to which the Dominions can replace European sources of supply. Foo<l is the main, although not the only subject of these discussions. Eggs are also declared to have a psychological, rather than a great food value, but the demand for them is bound to continue. A small improvement in the consumption of butter consequently can be expected. Recent consumption averaged li ounces. Bacon •is the principal item among other foods which the United Kingdom previously imported from countries now under German domination. It is understood that Canada will meet this deficiency.
