SECURITY TAX.
I POSITION OF SOLDIERS. STATEMENT BY MR. NASH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. According to a statement made in an interview to-nifrht by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, members of the Expeditionary Force, both in camp in the Dominion and overseas, are to be exempt from the payment of a national security tax on their military pay. He said that the application of this tax was exactly similar in all respects to that of the social security tax.
"The exemption from social security tax of members of the forces is effected by regulations gazetted last year," the Minister said, "and, as it is specifically provided in the Finance Act which imposed the nation .1 security tax, that it is to be assessed, collected and recovered in precisely the same way as the social security tax, th'e soldiers are thus exempt also from this charge. Members of the Expeditionary Force, both in and out of New Zealand, are also free from income tax on their military pay."
These concessions did not extend to members of the Permanent Staff remaining in New Zealand, Mr. Nash said, and would only apply to the military pay of territorials called up for training.
