British Labour Condemns Levy On Purchases. HIT POORER CLASSES. (Received 1.30. p.m.) , ■ ■ . LONDON. July, 9. Tho National Council of Labour,-after a meeting in the House of Commons, attended ►by Mr. Arthur Greenwood, Deputy Leader of the Labour party, ami Mr. Herbert Morrison, Minister ft.of Supply, issued a statement that the council was unanimously opposed to:.a purchase tax, which would be regarded as an unjustifiable extension of indirect taxation, imposing an unfair burden on the poorer section of the .community.
Tho statement has strengthened the belief in the lobbies that the tax will'be dropped.
