PROTECTION SOCIETY.
ROOMS FOR PENSIONERS. PROBLEM OF RENTS. The monthly executive meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was held in the society's rooms, Mr. Dawson Donaldson presiding. The committee's attention was drawn to the distress caused by the scarcity of rooms suitable for old age pensioners, working girls, and people of limited means, and cases were quoted of excessive rents being charged. It does not scein to be generally known that the Fair Kcnts Department can assist subtenants in cases where their rents are exorbitant, or who are threatened with eviction without sufficient reason. Among the cases assisted was one in which an outfit of new clothing was supplied for a baby whose parents had lost all their belongings in the wreck of the Niagara. ,' Several readjustments of domestic troubles as well as some reconciliations had been effected. By the courtesy, of the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London, Mr. W. .7. Jordan, it has been possible to trace the father of a child who is unprovided for. He left New Zealand several years ago, and has now been located, and will be required to contribute to the support of his child. During the month a total of 133 cases had been attended to, 58 of which had not previously appealed to the society for help; 22 eases were sent to the society's solicitor for further action to he taken. The inspector made 58 visits to homes and institutions, and attended the Magistrate's Court seven times, and the Children's Court three times.. The amount of £309 6/6 maintenance was handled for clients.
