"FLOATING NET."
SAVE LIVES AT SEA.
CORK ON ROPE FRAMEWORK.
CAN BE STORED ANYWHERE.
(Special—By Air Mail.)
LONDON, June 8.
A "floating net" recently approved by the British Ministry of Shipping may save thousands of lives at sea. It is already being adopted by many shipowners.
Providing a floating platform of net formation that will support persons for a long period, it has one particular advantage—it will not injure sailors when thrown overboard. Buoyancy is provided by cork arranged on a rope framework in meshes of 12Ln by 12in throughout.
The device can be stowed practically anywhere on the ship, or even slung up] under the beams on a high deck. If placed in a rolled-up position, it can be picked up by several men and thrown overboard. It will then automatically unroll itself down the side of a ship and serve as a ladder.
When the first men have taken their places at the bottom end, the net can be paid out overboard so that it will lie flat on the surface of the sea.
