HOME DEFENCE.

Are Mr. J. Morton's criticism* of Mr. Fitzherbert e suggestions not a little too sweeping? The lessons learned in Poland and France apply to Continental conditions more than to an isolated country like New Zealand. Any possible invader could not attack with such an overwhelming force of 'planes, the distance being so great. Hence riflemen are of paramount importance here, and a hundred thousand expert riflemen, well organised in each of the North and South Islands, would make any potential invader pause before stirring up such a hornet's nest. Wβ badly want a good rifle range in the Auckland neighbourhood. Riflemen would be glad to subscribe any fund for the establishment of such a range. J. A. MACNEILL.
