MAIL STOLEN.

RAID AT NEW LYNN. THIEVES IN POST OFFICE. STRONGROOM DOOR JAMMED. Thieves last night raided the New Lynn Post Ofiice where they attempted to blow open the strongroom door with explosives. No lUOlicy, valuables or postal notes were stolen, but tho thieves took a fairly largo quantity of mail matter which normally would have been delivered to New Lynn residents this morning.

Entrance was gained in an ingenious manner. After trying several other avenues, tho thieves forced tho lock on a large outside posting box, got inside and, using a jemmy, tho lock of the inside door. A charge of gelignite was inserted in tho lock of the large strongroom door and exploded, but tho explosion jammed the locking mechanism and the thieves were unable to open tho door. The services of a locksmith had to bo obtained this morning to open the door so that business could be transacted.

All money and postal notes were locked in tho strongroom, but the thieves made a thorough search of tho office for money. They stole a. bag containing a largo quantity of letters loft in tho office overnight. There were no registered letters among those stolen, but tho theft of the letters will lead to much inconvenience.
