IMPORTS AFFECTED.

FOODSTUFFS FROM ITALY.

CARGO ON ENEMY SHIPS

Dominion imports will be affected to some extent by the entry of Italy into the war and the defeat of France, together with shipping uncertainty in the Mediterranean.

The Associated Chambers of Commerce I have been in communication with the Government regarding New Zealand goods on Italian vessels sheltering in neutral ports end desire to know whether there is occasion to act for consignees of imports in these shipe as well as.for consignees of goods in German vessels. There ie New Zealand cargo on the Italian vessel Remo, which has been captured 'by the Australian authorities, end ■the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has been advised that this vessel will probably be placed in prize by the Australian Government. It is not yet known what formalities will be required for obtaining the New Zealand merchandise, but the Government is in communication with the Australian Government.

Italy, a country unable to produce sufficient foodetuffe for its, own requirements, is not a large supplier of foodstuffs to the Dominion, and many of the lines that have been imported to this country can be obtained elsewhere.
