FOR SPORTS QUEEN.
A RINGSIDE RAFFLE. There was a wristlet watch, valued at £5 to start it . . . and there was a smile from the Sports Queen, Mies Joy Asquith, to finish it. Anyway, something between £40 and £50 was added to the Sick and Wounded Fund as a result. It is a complicated story with the chief characters, Mr. B. Salek, announcer for the Auckland Wrestling Association, Sergeant-Major Lofty Blomfield and Joe Corbett, professional wrestlers, Mr. Jack McLean, referee, Mr. E. C. Johnston and two other unknown spectators at the wrestling last night. The watch was given by the Hon. Eliot Davis, M.L.C., for a one-night raffle and about £25 worth of tickets were sold. Miss Asquith and Mr. Salek (plus a police-sergeant) stepped into ring to draw it. "Forty-five! Has anybody got fortyfive?" asks Mr. Salek. Jfo answer; reaches into own pocket . . . produces handful. "I've got it myself." Mr. Salek offered it for auction. It was bought for £6 by Mr. Johnston. He auctioned it ... £5 to an unknown. Unknown raffles it . . . then the fun started. Lofty joined in ... £4 10/ he offered. "Four pounds fifteen," says Joe Corbett in other corner. "Four pounds sixteen," says Mr. McLean from third corner. Lcrfty got it for £5. It was his turn . . | and he quickly knockcd it down for £2 15/ to a bidder on the floor of the hall. Result of auctioninsr, £18 15/!
