LADIES' SOCIETY. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The seventy-seventh annual meeting of the Oneliunga Ladies' Benevolent Society was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. A. Garside, being in the cliair. The annual report drew attention to a slight reduction in the number of people requiring assistance owing to the operation of the Social Security Act. There remained, however, many cases where help was required toward easing of financial difficulties. The amount expended in this direction last year amounted to £173 in addition to the distribution of special Christmas cheer among some 43 families. Many parcels of warm clothing had also been made available by individual members. Mention was also made in the report of the deaths of Mrs. Todd Smith, Mrs. Hugh Murdoch and Miss Fleming, all of whom,had been closely associated with the society's activities for a great number of vears.
The thanks of the committee were accorded to Mrs. J. E. Green, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. G. Court and Miss M. A. Harrison for articles of clothing, and to Miss C. Fleming. Miss E. Frost, Miss K. M. Wing, Messrs. Lowrie and McGregor for monetary donations.
The treasurer reported that the funds of the society were in a sound position, due to the investment of several bequests made by former members and sympathisers, and that the committee had no apprehension for the future, as it should be able to meet any reasonable claims made upon its resources. The value of assets over liabilities amounted to £f>2o, being a slight reduction as compared with last year's balance.

Tregidga, Mrs. H. Foote, Mrs. F. Livingstone, Mrs. G. A. Black, Mrs. A. Garside, Misses E. Caughley, V. Burden, K. Morton, J. and E. Bower; honorary solicitor, Mr. E. G. Cowell; honorary auditor, Mr. A. G. Houldsworth. S|>ecial votes of thanks were accorded the retiring secretary. Mrs. H. J. Strong, the retiring treasurer, Mrs. A. G. Houldsworth, the retiring auditor, Mr. E. J. Gatland and the honorary solicitor, Mr. E. G. Cowell.
