"ON THE ICE."

ILLEGAL LIQUOR SALE.

HOTEL rORTKR FIXED.

"This doesn't seem to be the ordinary case of soiling after hours." said Mr. J. Moiling, S.M.. to-day in fining W. A. BrvaniT £2 for supplying liquor after hours, and J. M. P. Riordan £1 for aiding and assisting. Senior Sergeant Joyce said a constable had accosted Riordan one evening as he was seen to come out of the (irand Hotel. Riordan had several bottles of beer which he said he had purchased in the hotel earlier and left them to be picked up later. Mr. J. Terry, representing the defendants, said it was true Riordan had purchased the liquor between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and had asked that the bottles be placed on the ice, saying that he would collect them later. When he did call the bottles were given him by Bryant, theporter. Technically they were guilty, because the liquor had not been appropriated during lawful selling hours.
