OFFICIAL CLOSINGS. VETERANS RAIXT ROUND THEIR OLD CLUBS. A feature at the official closings of the Auckland and West End Rowing Clubs' season was the large attendance of old members. Itemarkahlc keenness was displayed by them in their clubs' activities and their remembrances, coining in impromptu manner, aroused a lively Interest among the present-day members. Often the remark was heard at the conclusion »f a veteran's story: "No wonder our clubs possess such fine records.'' Trial four racing took place at each function, while tho Waitemata Boating Club rowed a set of. double sculls trials. AUCKLAND CLUB. The Auckland Rowing Club's big boathouse. King's T>rive. was crowded on the occasion of the president's (Mr. S. Keid) official closing day and the function will long ho remembered as one of the most enjoyable and successful in the club's history. ' Owing to tho unavoidable absence of Mr. S. Hold, who was out of town, tho club captain. Mr. H. .lellio. welcomed tho visitors and in thanking tlie many staunch supporters expressed the hope that they would appreciate tho great performance of tho members in again finishing in second place in the regatta racing season. On behalf of the Auckland itnwing Association. Mr. <'. ti. Herd ma n, chairman of the management committee, thanked the members of the <:-ib fur the staunch support they had given him In his appeal for the centennial celebrations. He reminded members that they could only take out of the sport what they put ill. and it was the' members' hearty co-operation that had got them into their present high position in the Dominion's rowing. The Waitemata Boating Club hold the annual double sculls trials for the Poretmn Cup and miniatures. The racing resulted: First Heat.—J. Pelnmnro; M. Fitzgerald, beat .1. Sweeney, W. Martin, by two feet. Second Heat.—H. Sooor. M. Alison bent W. McC.cehle, T. Fitzgerald by a canvas. The final was a thrilling race and resulted in ii win for Spoor and Alison by half a length. WEST END CLUB. There was a largo attendance of old members, friends and supporters of the club, who wore the guuets of <he president, Mr. A. C. Norden. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Wardellc and a ladies' committee. The president Introduced to the gathering Stoker Phil Fox. a club member now serving in 11.M.5. Achilles, and who wa« with the warship In the River Plato engagemont with the Gorman pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spec. Hiiring the afternoon trial fours for trophies presented bv the president and trial eights for Mrs. Mortimer Fair's memorial shield were rowed. Some good racing and close finishes were witnessed Three crows contented the eights, rowed over n mile course, and after a close race K. F. Rapers crew crossed the fne half a length ahead of H. M. Mncdonald's er»w Six crews contested tho trial fours and in tho final K. F. Rnpor's crew gained tho verdict by half a length from G. Carder's crew. Results:— Trial Fours— Fit* boat: T.
