OPENING OF SEASON. PRELIMINARY ROUND. CLUBS FIELD NEW PLATERS. The 1940 Rugby League football season was opened on Saturday in bright weather with a preliminary round for the senior clubs, which gave them an opportunity to try new players before final selection of thirteens to play in the championship. The standard of play shown was fair, and the various matches were keenly contested. Results were: — Richmond 8. v. Marist 8. Mount Albert 23. v. Xewton 9. Manukau 16. v. City 13. Ponsonby 10, v. Papakura 8. Tl'« main match on the Xo. 1 ground, between Richmond and Marist, provided even play. Devinc and Mills scored tries for Richmond and Famed converted one. The latter had an arm broken, and had to retire from the game. Midgeley ami Harchanl scored tries for Marist. Anderson converting one. Mount Albert had much the better of the play in their match with Xewton, aud won easily. Mclnnarney, ManslU, Flower (2) and LeutliiTbarrow r-cired tries for Mount Albert. Banham Kicked three goals, and Marshal) one. Richards scored a try for Xewton, and Anderson kick.'d three goals. Manukau had a lead of thre? points at the end of their match with City. Dunster, Tawiiai. Kirlnui (2) scored tries for Manukau. Cha<e converting two. Tries f€>r City were scored by Smith (2) and Brassey. Smith converted two. Play was very even in the match between Ponsonby and Papakura. Kunnell and Dunning scored tries for Ponsonhv. Dormer converted one, and Boyd kicked a penalty goal. Bllkey and Osborne srored tries for Papakura. and Mclnnes converted one.
