ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Onehunga. Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. A. Garside, presiding. Finance.—The district fund was reported to be in credit £1267, less £1000 callmoney. The current rates collected to date were reported at £31,985 10/10. Rate arrears were £6900 17/. Scheme 13.—The council was asked to inform the Department of Labour the maximum proportion of the daily wage they could meet. The following, it was stated, were some of the works which are not eligible for subsidy under scheme 13: —Works for which full provision has j been made on estimates, loan proposals, ; normal works, metal supplies, maintenance of gardens, lawns, paths, recreation grounds and clearing weeds for streets in building. When asking for tfiis information the Department informed the council that all single men must accept country work under scheme 48, and all tit single men were being offered this work. Apart from these, the rest of the scheme 13 single men are being withdrawn, due to an insufficiency of work for married tnen, whose greater responsibility necessitate their being given preference.

Water Supply Board.—A suggestion was received from Mr. C. A. Whitney that an effort be made to induce the Government to legislate next session of Parliament to create a water supply board to control the whole of the water supply between Auckland and Arapuni. Also to try and prevent any future expenditure by the Auckland City Council on the Hnnua water scheme, the estimated cost of which was £1,251,000.

Motor Drivers.—A recommendation was received from the Municipal Association of New Zealand that members should supply the Transport Department with certain information dealing with the age and experience of motor drivers who may apply for new licenses or renewals. Loans. —The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board advised the council that he would resubmit the additions of the Onehunga waterworks and swimming baths loans to the board at its next meeting. Seddon Memorial.—ln reply to the council's request that the letter box in the Seddon Memorial, where six roads meet, should be removed to a safer place, as it is considered to be a source of danger to pedestrians from motor traffic when crossing Manukau Road, the Chief Postmaster advised that In VrS opinion this was not necessary. He said the post office at Royal Oak is situated 100 yards from the corner of Symonds Street and Mount Albert Road and this should be quite convenient for the business people in the vicinity, and suggesting that the letter] box in the memorial be therefore not. replaced. v I Payment of Rates.—The State Advances' Corporation intimated that during the! rating year in which land was acquired; full rates were paid. If held vacant for! the whole of the next year, special Tates would be paid. When houses were erected' and occupied, full rates would be paid for the period of occupancy and special rates for the balance of the rating year. When houses are erected fresh valuations will be supplied.
