FAITH NEEDED.
EASTER MESSAGE. ARCHBISHOP PREACHES. FINAL OFFICIAL SERMON. "The world needs, more than anything else, men and women of faith," declared Archbishop Averill. preaching for the la*t time as Bishop of Auckland at St. Mary's Cathedral last night. "Faith." he said, "is the resolution to live as if certain tlunjrs were true, in the confident assurance that they are true, and that we shall one day find out for ourselves that they are true. That definition has helped me much." Stating at the start hi* disbelief in "what he supposed to Ik* the traditional farewell sermon." Archbishop Averill j said that he was ?lad that hi? last ! official utterance should he spoken from that pulpit and on Easter Day. because the great truth of Easter had always been the foundation of his faith and teaching. "We must add our testimony to one thing that alone can save the world." he said, "the living Christ, our Lord and Master. If our lives and teaching have made even a tiny contribution to the increase of Christ, we can joyfully and cheerfully decrea.se. The one thin™ that matters as I lay down the duties and responsibilities of a long ministry of .50 years is. Have I been loyal to Jesus! Have I tried to lift Him up before the eyes of men? Have I tried to give an answer to the question. 'What is God like?' and to rebut the false answer. 'We have no kin™ but Caesar'? "May God give to you all the real joy and real happinc.-s of this glorious Easter festival. God bless you." Easter Services. Easter was observed by all churches with appropriate ceremony and there was a special ceremony held at the Auckland Hospital vesterday morning. conducted by Archbishop Averill. A nurses' choir led the singing of Easter hymns.
