RACING AT ELLERSLIE

GOOD FINISH. , EASTER HANDICAP. BLACK THREAD SUCCEEDS. KATHBEEXA NARROWLY ! BEATEN. l i Some good racing was provided at Elleislie on Saturday, when the Auckland Racing Club opened its autumn meeting, j and in several instances fast times were 1 recorded. j The Easter Handicap, bhe chief event, j provided an excellent contest, there being little between bhe four placed horses. Black Thread, the winner, was always in a good position, and stayed on over j the concluding stages to beait Kathbella ; by half a head, with Proud Fox and Te ] Kawiti a dead-heat for third, naif a length away. Kathbella failed to jump away ! quickly, and was the last to leave tie mark, co that her performance was an ■ excellent one. If she had begun smartly it looked as though <jhe would have won. This was Black Thread's best performance outside sprint events. Nightbeam followed up bis Wellington form by winning the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. He put in a great run on the outside, and finished on solidly to beat Phaleron by a length, with Cillae a neck away, and Sir Cameron, Beau Leon, Lambourn and Happicoat next. Royal Abb scored his first success over country when he accounted for the Mangere Steeplechase. He save a <?ood display of jumping, but his task would have been much harder if Te Ronga, who came to grief at bhe last fence when with him, had stood up. Belle of Bow, who won at Paeroa, came on to get second, while Gascyne was third, and Floodlight fourth. These were the only ones to finish. Marshall Hall led from end to end in the Onslow Stakes to record his firat victory. Belle Femme, who was drawn on the extreme outside, had to cover a lot of extra ground before she got a good position, and she finished a length and a quarter behind Marshall Hall, with Volifox, who had been placed on a couple of occasions previously, a neck away. Night Pilot, Oragon and Ascot Bloom followed. The concluding event, the Eden Handicap, went to Tea Gong, with Raepata and Susan in the places. The winner galloped over everything in the last furlong to score decisively. Joan Peel was fourth and then came Maioro, Runanga, Beverley and Acreman. The weather, with the exception of a couple of light showers during the afternoon, was fine though overcast. There was a large attendance and the course was in excellent order. During the day the sum of £80,518 was put through the machine, against £79,684 10/ for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £833 10/. Late results were:— EASTER HANDICAP of 21280. THE DONCASTER.

BEAULIVRE SECOND. READING THE ST. LEGES. RACING AT RANDWICK. SYDNEY, March 24. Having his first start in Sydney, the New Zealand three-year-old Beaulivre made a great effort to win yesterday at Randwick the Doncaster Handicap on the opening day of the Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting, when he finished second to the Newmarket Handicap winner Mildura. Beaulivre stripped beautifully, although he was probably in need of a race. Mildura was right at the top of his form and finished very solidly. Mildura and Beaulivre are both trained by the former New Zealander, G. Price, the winner being ridden by D. Munro, who also scored on Reading and Rex. The popular fancy High Caste shaped poorly and is apparently feeling the effects of his long campaign. The Victorian two-year-old Lucrative ran away with the Sires' Produce Stakes. Maikai won the Autumn Plate so impressively that his prospects in the SydneyCup appear rosy. By his success in the Australian St. Leger, Reading joined the select band of three-year-okls who have won the two Derbies and St. Legers. The weather was fine and sunny, and the attendance was estimated at 55,000. Results: — First Hurdles of £500, about two miles. — .Tack Mac, 10.7 (L. Rynes). 1 ; Mag Mort, 9.4 (N. Brace), 2; Spearblne, 11.13 (J. Hood), 3. Ten started. Length; length and a quarter. Time, 3.43 i. Autumn Plate of £1500, weight-forage, one mile and a half. —Maikai, 9.0 (H. Mornomont), 1; Mosaic (N.7,.-bred), 9.0 (D. Munro), 2; Old Rowley, 9.0 (H. Badger), 3. Also started: Royal Chief, St. Constant. 9.3. Setting a slow pace. Old Rowley led for a mile, when Mosaic and Maikai closed up. Royal Chief attempted to get up at the turn into the straight, but was beaten off. Mosaic and Maikai staged a neck-and-neck struggle over the final. stages, the latter gaining the decision by a head. Old Rowley was two and a half lengths away third, with Royal Chief fourth. Time, 2.34 J. A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stake* of £3500. For two-year-olds; colts 8.10, fillies 8.7 ; seven furlongs.—Lucrative, 8.10 (M. McCarten), 1; Pandect. 8.10 (H. Badger). 2; Trueness, 8.7 (E. Bartle), 3. Ten started, including Patrician and Beauregard. Two lengths; neck. Rimvell was fourth. Time, 1.254. Doncaster Handicap of £ 3000, one mile. —Mildura, 8.8 (D. Munro), 1; Beaulivre, 8.7 (M. McCarten), 2: Kl Golea. 9.4 (N. Crighton), 3. Also started: High Caste, 9.0; Geebung, Gold Salute, 8.3; Feminist, 5.2 ; Denis, 7.13: Bonny Loch, 7.12; Rodborough, 7.10; The Albatross, Tuhitarata, 7.9 ; Gay Prince, 7.5 ; Breeze, 7.3 ; Billposter, Baveon. 7.2; The Squire. 0.13; Cherry Bar, 6.12 ; Royal Routine, 6.7. From barrier-rise, Beaulivre was always near the front, closely attended by Mildura and The Albatross. Mildura moved up at the home turn, where Beaulivre shot into the lead and looked very dangerous. However, Mildura, desperately ridden, overtook the New Zealander at the distance and beat him by three-quarters of a length. El Golea was half a length away third, with Cherry Bar fourth. Then came Denis and Rodborough. High Caste was in the picture for half a mile and then faded out. Gold Salute ran disappointingly. Time, 1.36 J. A.J.C. St. Leger Stakes of £ 1500. Three-year-olds: colts, 8.10: fillies, 8.7; one mile and three-quarters.—Reading, 8.10 (D. Munro), 1; Dashing Cavalier, 8.10 (J. Coutts), 2: Bronze Flight (N.Z.-bred). 8.10 (S. Davidson), 3. The only starters. Dashing Cavaiier made a good race with Reading, but the latter showed his class In the run to the post to win well by two lengths.' Bronze Flight was eight lengths away third. Time, 3.0. Vauclnse Handicap of £ 700; seven furlongs.—First Division : Mitsui, 8.8 (A. Briscoe), 1; Anne, 8.12 (G. Whitney), 2; TJberous, 8.1 (E. Bartle), 3. Fourteen started, including Stalin. Three-quarters of a length; length. Fly was fourth. Time, 1.25}.

DONCASTER HANDICAP.

PRAISE FOR BEAULIVRE. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The weather is fine for Sydney Cup Day at Randwick. The "Herald." commenting on the Doncaster Handicap, says: "Beaulivre was every bit as good as hie excellent form in New Zealand indicated. Three weeks ago it was problematical whether Beaulivre would be fit for the Doncaster Handicap, and before Saturday he had not: run in Australia. His performance to lead nearly all the way was striking. What he would have done if he had had a race before Saturday is conjecture. Mildura joined Wakeful and Sir Foote as the only 'horse to follow a success in the Newmarket Handicap with a win in the Doncaster. For all hie greatness 9.0 in the fast-run Doncaster Handicap was beyond High Caste." The turf writer of the ''Labour Daily" considers Mildura fortunate to win the Doncaster Handicap. He thinks that had Beaulivre raced in Sydney before the big mile he would have downed Mildura.
