WASTED LABOUR.

[ May I comment on the article in the ' "Star" 011 "Wasted Labour/' Military ; enlistments do not nil come from men who held good jobs, for quite a good percentage came from men who were unemployed or 011 subsidised work. A* for receiving £4 $/ a week, with paid holidays, though it may apply to some, there are others who receive under the above amount, and in the case of an average wage it is well under £4 a week. 11l the case of holidays, a -subsidised worker has to be 011 the job a certain period before he is entitled to holiday time, and as jobs arc starting and closing all the time a worker often does not receive the so-called paid holidays. While a few men may be satisfied with subsidised work, there are a large number who would only be too pleased to got back in private employment. I have applied for many a position, but in the case of those who have had the courtesy to reply I have been told the position has been fined. On the subsidised job \Vhere I am employed, should a man be lucky enough to receive private employment, he is always congratulated bv his fellow-workers. * " SHOVEL.
