URGENT WORKS.

NEW SCHOOL BUILDINGS. i 40 IX AUCKLAND DISTRICT. The fact that there were about 40 schools in the Auckland district requiring replacement or additions urgently was mentioned by the chairman of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. \V. J. Campbell, to-day, when the board received a letter from the Education Department asking for next year's programme. Mr ; Campbell -said the Department was now asking that these works be resubmitted in order of urgency, but this wu impossible, as they were all of the utmost urgency. He referred to the Royal Oak school, concerning which tenders had been in Wellington for the past 18 months. Mr. W. J. Boyer: The onus should be on the Department to say which is the most important work. The Hon. A. Burns was of the opinion that .the board-should ask for authority tp -call for tenders for buildings that had already been authorised. These, too, were urgent, and comprised a long list. Unless these authorities were granted the moneys would not be avilablc ui the next financial year.
