ACHILLES POINT.

PROPOSED LAY-OUT. DISTINCTIVE FEATURES. FORMATION OF TERRACES. An attractive lay-out for the development of the bold headland near Ladies' Bay, at St. Heller's, which was recently named Achilles Point by the Auckland City Council in commemoration of the achievement of the captain, officers and crew of the cruiser in the historic sea battle off the River Plate, has been prepared by the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler. The Mayor, .Sir Ernest Davis, stated to-day that it was appropriate that the plan should be completed for submission to the council about the time of the return to Auckland of the Achilla,. The report he had received from the citv engineer stated: '"The proposal is to form two terrace-. ot different levels. The greater portion of the upper terrace will be graded and glassed, and the portion which will bo more frequently used will be paved with concrete flags, together with the whole of the lower .terrace. The upper terrace will be supported by a concrete wall. into which will be * built semi-circular seats, constructed in concrete or stone.

"The plan also provides a suitable con crete wall and railing to enclose the area. and give ample protection for young people. On the projecting semi-circular portion of the upper terrace provision | will be made fur the erection of a direc-tion-table, the surface of which would be constructed in bronze. Upon thin bronze will be engraved a map of th ■ harbour, including the gulf and channel. and points of interest within the rang.of vision. On the rim of the table it i> proposed to attach a bronze plate, upon which will be inscribed a suitable reference to the achievement of the Achilles' officers and men. The winged portion, within the enclosure of the background of this area, will provide a suitable place for four or live trees to be planted." In conclusion Sir Ernest said: "I am sure that this- proposal will be most attractive, and provide a distinct aiul titting feature as the termination of Tamaki Drive from a point commanding one of the most arresting views of the harbour front.''
