"PROFESSOR MAMLOCK."
RUSSIAN FILM AT STRAND.
At last the much-discussed film, ''Professor Mamloc-k.'" has arrived in Auckland and will open a season at the Strand 1 heat re on Friday. A Russian production, it is made doubly interesting, dh ex-ted as it is against the Xazi regime, by the new relations that now exist between the Russians and the Nazis. It is, in fact, a highlv embarrassing picture as far as both parties arc concerned. Political melodrama, it is at one and the same time an indictment of the Xazi persecution of the -lews and a history of thc'Nazi rise to power through terror. The treatment is, of course, vehement, but stern and unrelenting as the film is, it seldom twist* facts in the inerests of propaganda. The film's sincerity is both an answer to Nazi-ism and a contribution to history. Incidentally, the acting is splendid and eloquent sub-titfc* in English atone for the tact that the dialogue is in Russian. The story recount*, in brief, the story of the Jewish Piofessor Mamloc-k. head of a surgical clinic in Germany in 1933-34. and his son. Rolf. .After the Reichstag fire the elder Mam lock is degraded, branded "Jiide."' and thrown out of his clinic. How his son joins the revolutionary underground movement .ind works against the Nazi * re-rime s.uppliee splendid dramatic situations. It is ferritin in its sincerity but "Professor Mamloc-k" conveys facts visually that must have more effect on the minds of hnw»"it«- than thousands of written words. This is a pict.ire not to he missed in any circumstances by those who seek to keep abreast of modern political developments and those who want to see a film that will raise iu them all the varied emotions of whiA they are capable.
