STREET CLEANING. SMALL HAND-TRUCKS. USED IN THE SUBURBS. Although the horse and cart is still used by the Auckland City Council in connection with street cleaning, the modern motor truck forms a big part of the municipal scavenging plant, and, in addition, small hand-trucks with rubber) tyres, have been used to a considerable extent in various suburban areas during
lie past year. Unlike Hie old-time land-truck, with its large wooden jvheels, the new type raw be pushed ilong with a minimum of effort. In some of the suburbs covered pits havv? been provided, and rubbish is deposited there, in tins, to await another collection by one of the council's large motor trucks.
In tidy habits an Auckland public! may liavc improved considerably in recent years, but there are still people who ignore rubbish baskets at convenient places in streets, and who persist i:i scattering paper, fruit skins and similar things, without thought of labour bein_r added to the task of those whose work it is to keep city footpaths and streets clean. In the suburbs fallen leaves from trees add to the collection of litter, and contribute largely to the amount of scavenging work that has regularly to be done.
