Fire destroyed 2000 homes in Shizuoka, where 300 were killed, says the Tokyo correspondent of the United Press.
A later cable reported that 8500 dwellings were destroyed, rendering 50,000 homeless.
According to the Demei News Agency, troops are dynamiting the city to check the gale-driven flames.
Shizuoka, a city with 38,000 inhabitants, is 85 miles south-west of Yokohama.
