DOCTOR OF SCIENCE.
SIR GEORGE A. JULIUS. HONORARY DEGREE CONFERRED. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. The conferring of an honorary degree of Doctor of Science 011 Sir George Alfred Julius, 8.E., M.l.Mech.E., M.1.E., Australia, was decided on by the Senate of the University of New Zealand to-day, in recognition of his distinguished services in the field of applied sciences, particularly engineering and economics. Sir George is the chairman of the Commonwealth Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. This is the fifth euch award in the 70 years of the university's existence.
The eldest son of Archbishop Julius, who died last year, Sir George was born at Norwich, England, and educated at the Melbourne Church of England Grammar School and the University of New Zealand. He was on the engineering staff of the West Australian railways from 1806 to 1907, since which year he has been in prac* t!<•<> as a consulting engineer in Sydney. He has been chairmr.n of the Australian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research since l!»2(i. He is also chairman of the Standards Association of Australia. He is the inventor of the automatic totalisator.
