RESTORATION OF CUTS.

WELLINGTON, Thursday.

The Senate of the University of New Zealand met in Wellington to-day. The Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, was present for a short time at the beginning of the morning session.

The finance committee reported that it had considered the following suggestions for estimated uses of the Government grant: Group A: Restoration of the 10 |K>r cent cut to degree examiners. 10 per cent on £7050, £850; restoration of 10 per cent to medical-dental examiners, 10 p.c. on £3300, £370$ restoration of full exchange to English iners, 12$ per cent on £1200. £150, Group B: Restoration of the third travelling scholarship in arts at the rate of £280, £500; restoration of-'the second travel* ling scholarship iu science at the rate of £250, BOO; increase of senior scholar l ships to £70, 23 at £10, £230$ increase of travelling scholarships to £290, fcwd arts and one science, each for two yeatl, £300; law, architecture, medicine, ettf gineering, agriculture, each one yetkf, £250. Group Ci New scholarships silg' gestcd in 1037-38, dentistry and com* taerce, each one year, £500; total, £3060. It was reported that the eStecutlve Committee had, tinder authority from the senate, taken action in regard to group A. The committee had agreed to recommend that the senate approve the statutes prepared by the academic board in regard to group B. The committee further agreed to recommend the senate to instruct that the regulations necessary to establish the scholarships under group C be drawn up and included in the statutes.

The adoption of the report was held over until later in the meeting.

The report of the honorary treasurer, Mr. P. Levi, on the finances of the unL versity stated that it now had invested funds, including all funds held in trust.
