FIRE ON VESSEL.
MOTOR SHIP KARORO.
OUTBREAK IN ENGINE ROOM

GISBORNE, Thursday.
While bite motor ship Karoro was working in the bay at nine o'clock last night a fierce blaze occurred in the engine room and it waß not brought under control until half an hour later. The steel-lined engine room did not suffer materially, but much of the paiut' work was ruined.
The vessel is a Wooden tugboat ottrned l»y the Gisborne Stevedoring Lightering Conijwny, Limited, and the cargn space was filled with frozen meat. The out l break was caused by the contents of a four-gallon tin of petrol spilling and becoming ignited by contact with a dynamo.
The alarm was given promptly by the chief engineer. Mr. N- Brown. The greater part of the engine room Was t»oon alight. The engineer \va« forced back, and he and the master of the vessel, Crtptain A. Thomson, fought the blaze. T3ie plight of the ship was soon noticed and a lead of hose was sent aboard from another vessel in the bay. A supply of extinguishers was made available.
