A GOOD EFFORT.

MEADOW SPRINTS.

SLY FOX GOES WELL

WORK AT TMKTWA Kf,

Further visiting horses to put in an appearance at I rentiiam yesterday morning (says tile Wellington "Post") were Meadow in the charge of R. .1. Gardiner. Lad.v I inulo in the charge of W. Hume, and Desert Sun. in the charge of K. .1. Xeilson. As inost of the other horsed already on the scene were galloped on Tuesday, there was not a deal of tast work. The weather .was tine, with a stiff wind, and the plough track ya* in tine order, though the wind prevented exceptional times. Meadow is a three-year-old Hunting Sung gelding who was unlucky not to win a race at the Auckland meeting, where he was three timtw second, including to Sunoja in the open seven furlongs on New * ear s Day, and his first day 's engagement next week is the Apprentices' Plate. Ridden by P. Burgess, he was always going a bit better than of Asia (K. Smith) in a half-mile eprint in this morning, the best time over the distance, and he was giving away a lot of weight. Lady Tinkle will also be contesting the Apprentices' Plate. She looks well, and, ridden by J. McCauley, she did half a mile comfortably on the grass this morning in 51s.

Desert Sun was given pacing only. He is a light-fraimed gelding, but he showed his promise in his onjy race to date, at Levin in November, wnfere he would have won if he had not gone off the course. He was a bit lame following that race, which was the reason why 'lie was not raced during the holidays. He is to contest the Ruapehu Handicap on the first day and the Plate on the second day of the meeting, and on those efforts depends whether he will remain for the last day or go to Ash'hurst. The only other visitors to be galloped were Sly Fox and Blonde Princess. Sly Fox (Burgees) was worked over a mile with Tooley Street (S. Wilson). Pulling bard, he was soon three lengths in front, and, although he was only a length clear at the half mile, reached in dOV&s, he was never off t'he bit to finish a neck to the good of his mate, the time for the last 'half mile being 555.

Blonde Princess (Burgess) easily defeated Miss Api>ellant (R. Bucknell) over six furlongs in 1.17, the last half mile in 58s. She has been accepted for both the Clip and the Telegraph, and if a suitable rider can be secured she might be started along with Sly Fox in the Cup. Raana, Boldstep, Black T'hread and Malagigi were allotted strong pacing only. Malagigi will be galloped on Saturday.

Absolve (A. J. Newnham), working the reverse way. ran half a mile with the wind behind him in 48s.

Globe Trotter (H. Duncan) and Silver River (Newnham) went over a round, the last mile in and the last half mile in 53%5, finishing together. The pace was on only over the last furlong. Silver River is working better than he has for a long time.

Good Sun (H. Guppy), ridden all the way, traversed a mile in 1.44V4, the last half mile in 525. Siglow (Newnham) did the last three furlongs of his work in 375. Trench Law (Smith) took 37^is.

Siegmund (T. Biggs), picked up by Acrobat (S. Q. Robinson) at the half mile, ran a mile in 1.44, the final half in 51s. They finished together, but Siegmund was doing it well.

Beau Vite (A. Foster) and Galteemore (J. Lawler). intended mainly to sprint their last three furlongs, kept a sound pace all the way from t'he mile. In the straight Beau Vite ran readily to a lead of three lengths, the full mile taking 1.46 and the last three furlongs 37». Beau Vite is still without a rider for the Cup, as his usual pilots are already engaged for other acceptors, H. N. Wiggins being on Laughing Lass, A. E. Ellis on Royal Chief or Catalogue, and L. J. Ellis on Beau Repaire. BIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The services of H. X. Wiggins hfcve ■been engaged for Laughing Lam in the Wellington Centennial Ojp, and he wiill also pilot Bionwen in the sprint. A. Jenkins will have t#i<? mount on Siegmwnd, G. R. Tattersall on Old Bill, W. J. Broughton on Beau'partir, A. E. Ellis on Catalogue (if Royal Chief does not start'), ■amd A. C. Messervy on Mooreotis. B. H. Morris will pilot Disdain in the sprint. Bolides his Cup mount, Broughton has been engaged for Colonel Bogey, Lambourn and Mayfair. MAY NOT RACE AGAIN. Arctic King, a Nw Zealand Cup winner, has been turned out in Marlborough, and it is now iloiibtful if he will ever race again. HORSES TO BPELL. Clarion Call returned from Auckland in good order, and he has been turned out for a spell. Among Ulie hoises that have been sent home are Girl Pat, who likes tlbe winter going, Vasoones, Silvan us and Miisfl Hallomet. A SOLID TWO-YEAR-OLD. Lancelot, who will be having his fin* racing at Trenitbom next week, is the Hunting Song—Princess FJisabetih gelding whom H. B. Lorigam is training for Mrs. B. George-Mitchell. He has developed into a solid stamp of two-year-old, and he is very sensible in his work. NOT FOR TRENTHAM. Dainty Sue, who fell during the running of the Marton Cup, took no serious inarm from the mishap, and she was out on tte Awapuni tracks during the week. She will not, however, .be racing at the Wellington meeting. FULFILLING PROMISE. Spendthrift is now fulfilling the promise Jic showed as a two-year-old. Two outright wins aind a dead-heat was his contribution to the wtake-earners over the holidays and on each occasion he won by staying on. He had his first race in open oomjmny at Invercargill, and won ihe Flying Handicap decisively. The Paper Money gelding lvgs not won beyond six furlongs, but lie should run out a middle distance without difficulty. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. JIMMY (Otahuhu). —The second to kat race on the second day of thj Canterbury. Park Trotting Club's meeting started a* 4.34 pjn.
