PETROL ECONOMY.

NEW CAR DESIGN.

Nt) GEARS OR CLUTCH.

TECHNICIAN'S INVENTION.

(Special.—By Air Mali.)

LONDON, December 2.

Mr. Leonard Murphy, once Edison's chief technician in Britain, this week demonstrated a car of his own design wliich has no clutch, no gearbox and reduces petrol consumption by it least half. This car, which he is confident may revolutionise road transport, is driven by a combination of ele:trical and internal combustion engines. The car weighs twenty-seven hundredweight; it was originally a 16 horsepower model. "With three up, we drove at a steady 35 miles an hour, occasionally accelerating to 45 milas an Lour," said a motorist who made the trip with Mr. Murphy.

Mr. Murphy has removed the car's original Iβ horse-power engine, find replaced it with a 7 horse-power engine. He has added a 3} horse-power dynamotor of hie own design and a set of batteries.

The car is started on the batteries. Once it is in motion, the petrol engine takes up the drive and maintains the speed. The electric motor, now operating as a dynamo, is replacing the enerT used in starting. e,7
