NO MORE PLAY.

PLUNKET SHIELD.

WIN FOR WELLINGTON.

HEAVY RAIN FALLING.

SOME CITY FLOODING

(By Tolepraph.—lTess Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day

Rain which began in showers yesterday afternoon developed into a continuous downpour, which continued throughout the night. At times it was very heavy, and ie etill coming down heavilv.

There is no prospect of the Pluuket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington being resumed. The players are going to the ground at eleven o'clock, but only to collect their gear, and Wellington win on the first innings. The Auckland team ieave on the three o'clock train.

Ikvngotai aerodrome i« flooded and is reported to bo unworkable.

All low-lying areas about the city are eimilarly affected by surface water.

Condition* at the motor camp at Minimal - are uncomfortable. No serious flooding bus yet been reported from the Hutt Vnlley.

At Kelburn Observatory , ! 4.4 Sin of rain were recorded up to nine a.m. this morning, most falling from 10 p.m. onwards. The rain eas'.'d off at 11 a.m., but approximately another half inch will have fallen up to noon. Very Serious Slip. Residents at the back end of Karori nro again sufferers from flooding. Already numerous slips have occurred about the hill roads and properties.

A very serious slip occurred when many thousands of yards of sandy hillside overlooking Lyull Bay started to break away at 6 a.m. This was the scene of a serious slip fifteen months ago, and the repair work failed completely. A length of three chains at Sutherland Road, and a shorter length on Carlton Road still higher en the hillside, broke away, smashing the storm water and drainage services, and carrying off its foundations the house of Mr. <J. R. Dunce, 132 A, Queen's Drive.

A huge amount of silt swept down across Queen's Drive flooding four houses here, and a dozen more houses in Torn Street.

The city motor camp at Miramar is not affected, but a motor camp with 150 cars at Scot's College is very badly flooded. About a third of the parties have been surrounded.

The aerodrome is quite unusable today, but the exhibition grounds are not flooded.

The rain does not appear to have been (heavy in the hills. The Hutt River is practically unaffected, but the whole of the Petone and Lower Hutt areas are carrying a large amount of surface water.

The Happy Valley Road 13 .-ompletely Mocked, the Parade at Island Bay ie flooded over , about a third of a mile, ard a number of houses have water over the floors. The new outfall drain burst and the trams were unable to reach the terminus. There are several large slips on the surrounding hillsides, including one against a house. Wettest Ever Known. December is now definitely the wettest Wellington has known. The rainfall an recorded at Kelburn Observatory ie 15in, five times the normal for the month. With the flood of a couple of weeks ago hardly drained away, the present one is likely to linger, the ground being already eo sodden. Kelburn's 4.48 in is not the heaviest fall. Last night the Beacon Hill gauce recorded 6.15 in.

Wellington scores four points for the first innings win, and, although the loser at that stage, Auckland is credited with two points. It in still possible for Auckland to retain the trophy. This £>uld be done by outright victories over Otago and Canterbury, both of whom are to be played on the home pitch at Eden Park, provided Wellington does not obtain the full eight points from both the £outh Island provinces. When Wellington won the Shield in 1935-30 Auckland had not been defeated, Wellington's two points for first innings loss against Auckland giving the capital city the championship. It scored eightpoint victories over both Southern XL'S (Canterbury by two runs). Auckland beat Otago outright, and secured fourpoint wine only against Canterbury and We inston. This made the final points: Wellington 18, Auckland IC.
