THE FIRST PENCILS.
Pencils were first used about 700 years ago. German monks used graphite'from the mountains to rule the lines for their beautiful manuscripts. Later one monk, tired of dirtying his fingers and smearing the manuscript, devised a little hollow tube of wood for the graphite Tlr* was the beginning of the first pencil, and it did not change much until 1794, when it was learned how to grind graphite up and mix it with clay so as to make jencils of varying hardness.
