LONG DRY SPELL.

CANTERBURY DOWNPOUR.

FARMERS WELCOME RAIN,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

CHRIST CHURCH, this clav

Canterbury s long spell of drv weather came to a sudden end in tlie-early hours of this morning. Heavy rain was expel ienced in the city and most parts of the province, the downpour lasting until about nine o'clock. Last night the weather was warm and fine, which gave no warning of the storm. At 9 a.m.. however, just under an inch of rain had fallen, and there was considerable flooding in many city streets. for the most part the rain was enthusiastically welcomed. It was badly needed for pastures, while it came at the right time for the filling out of the wheat before the harvesting season. The only place where serious flooding occurred was at the new overhead bridge at Rakaia. There was so much water on the north side early this morninothat cars were unable to get through. °
