The starters and their handicaps were • lorangi 55m, Tamatea lh 20m, Little Jim 2h 20m, M&rangi 2h 35m, Aramoana- 2h 55m, Altair 3h 20m, Windward 4h 10m, Tainui 4h 20m, Matatua 5h 30m. Ranger scr. and Bevel 6h 3um, did not start. "At gunfire, Little Jim was a length over the line and was recalled, answering promptly and losing very little time. lorangi, virtually scratch boat, was first away with mainsail, topsail and balloon jib drawing well, followed by Tamatea, Altair, Marangi, Arainoana, Windward and Matatua In close order with Tainui 6m later.

All carried extras on the lead down harbour to North Head, lorangi and Tamatea leading with Little Jim, Aramoana and Marangi neit. They passed round North Head at 7.25 p.m., where booms were gybed to starboard for their long run out through Tiri passage and up the northern coast. The wind fell a bit lighter after 9 p.m., but was still a fair breeze, the boats also having the benefit of an ebb tide, and they made fairly good time to Tiri. If the southerly holds today the first boat should reach Whangaroa Heads to-morrow forenoon.
