ROAD SAFETY.

APPEAL BY MINISTER. HOLIDAY TRAFFIC DANGERS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. An appeal lor special care on the road during the Christmas holidays has been made by the Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple. He said that during the next 10 days traffic was expected to be the heaviest ever recorded in New Zealand. Last Christmas 15 persons were killed and 340 injured on the roads. Unless much greater care was taken this Christmas the accident toll would be very much greater than ever before. "The position is particularly serioue at the present time owing to the special circumstances in which our country is placed," said Mr. Semple. "Just as the traffic risks are greater than ever before, so is the need fpr accident prevention."

The present conflict was a war of resources as much as a war of arms, he went on. Every life lost would mean one individual less for the defence of the country, and every pound spent on repairing damaged vehicles would mean one pound not available for production.

The best way to assist in conserving national resources was to keen down speed, which would increase safety and conserve petrol. In addition, all foni's of recklessness should be avoided and road courtesy should be observed.
