OUT OF LUCK.

M. B. EDWARDS' STABLE. Two years ago M. 15. Edwards had in Gamble and War Buoy, two of the best pacers in New Zealand, anil he may ha\*e been a bit unlucky in not winning the Cup that went to Lucky Jack, states a Southern writer. Possibly luck in the running had something to do with the result. This is rather a lean season for Edwards so far as champion racehorses go, and he has nothing in his stable eligible for the big race. Gamble lias been retired to the stud and War Buoy, well past his best after a sensational racing career, has left the Yaldhurnt stable.

In successive years Edwards had a string of great horses, including WatBuoy, Gamble, Frisco Lady, Frisco Boy and Two's Loose, three c>f whom win the New Zealand Derby, and all won one or nioro classic races. The break in the run of successes camc when Two's Loose dropped dead in the AII-A god Stakes at Ashburton after having won both the Sapling Stakes and Xew Zealand. Derby. Neither Frisco Boy nor Frisco Lady has reached quite the top class amongst the stayers, although the former is a particularly good (sprinter. The hope of the Ynldhurst stable is this year centred in three-year-old Durability, who. while failing to win a rare as a two-year-old, arid meeting more bad luck than any horse of his age, may still have to be considered in the valuable classics he is being .prepared for. Sir .Tulien, who won the Sapling Stakes, is not engaged in this year's Derby, and Durability, who apparently verpiired time to mature, is just the type to develop into a good three-vear-old. Even without the opposition of Sir .Tulien the 1939 Xew Zealand Derby is not going to be easily won, and the field promises to be as select and n<» big as any that has contested the race in recent years.
