N. McLEAN PRESIDENT. THE 1940 CHAMPIONSHIPS. ALLOCATED TO AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. The annual conference of delegates to the New Zealand Boxing Association decided to : day to allot the 1940 championship meetings to Auckland.

The election of officers resulted: — President, Air. X. C. McLean (Auckland); vice-presidents, Messrs. Courtis (Jnvercargill). Baillie (Greymouth); appeal committee, Messrs. Sanders, V. R. Meredith, E. A. Craig (Auckland); members of New Zealand Council, Messrs. J. R. Simpson, E. Blundell, E. A. Dawson, H. H. Sterling, C. G. Bridge, E. C. Magee (Wellington), A. G. Parker (Dannevirke). A vote of thanks was carried to Messrs. D. R. Hoggard and B. A. Guise, retiring members of the council.

Several additions to the rules were ■ adopted. A Manawatu remit was to the [ effect that expenses allowed boxers should not exceed £10, unless under special circumstances o" merit, and that a permit l>e obtained from the New Zealand Council.

This was lost, but an Otago remit, bearing on the same question, was adopted as follows: The maximum amount paid to any boxer by way of expenses in respect to any particular content must not exceed £15, and no expenses be paid to any boxer in respect to a contest held in the town in which lie resides.

"The public to-day is educated to slugging instead of boxing," declared Mr. G. H. Sceats (Gisborne), in urging the conference to take steps to inform the public of the principles regarding scientific boxing and self-defence and of the bright side of boxing as a sport. He said notice was being taken by parents of boys of recent articles in the Press that the sport was dangerous. The public was not informed of the efficient control of •boxhig in New Zealand. A recommendation to give effect to the proposal was adopted.
