WHEN DUTY CALLS.
TEACHERS' FUTURE.
GRADING AFTER RETURN.
AUCKLAND BOARD'S ACTION.
Concern for the future welfare of school teachers who may leave their petitions to take up military service during the present war was expressed at to-day's meeting of the Auckland Education Board.
The board should ask the Department of Education to give very careful consideration to questions of grading and salary in cases of teachers who undertook military service Mr. T. U. Wells contended. During their absence their rate of improvement in grading should continue at least at the rate it had progressed during the past two years. . Mr. Wells added that his remarks applied equally to women teachers who gave their services in activities such as nursing. "I think the suggestion is a good one," remarked the chairman, Mr. W. J. Campbell. The Hon. A. Burns, M.L.C., said that in the last war the board and the Department did everything they could to protect those teachers who went away. "They were not forgotten last time," he added.
A resolution referring the matter to the Department was then carried.
